Buffalo-based singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco is known for her staunchly independent stance and thoughtful lyrics. DiFranco has released records on her own label, Righteous Babe Records, for a number of years, and in 2007 she took the next logical step by opening up her own venue in downtown Buffalo. LIVE AT BABEVILLE captures the first two shows at the venue, on September 11 and 12, and features 17 songs by the charismatic singer. Among the highlights are reworkings of tracks such as "Napoleon," "Independence Day," and "Hypnotized."

Anyone who thinks of this band as actor Juliette Lewis's vanity project should already have been dissuaded by the relative merits of their first album. But all doubts are cleared away with this second release, which features anthemic, guitar-driven new wave songwriting and thoughtful, stirring lyrics. Lewis tackles the material with chops, verve, and conviction, mastering a dynamic sing/speak technique that channels equal parts Iggy Pop and Robert Plant. If this is just another acting role, so be it--it's an Oscar-winner.

Danielle Dax was one of the indie-rock goddesses of the ‘80s. Part of her charm was her inability to be categorized—yes, she had some Goth overtones, but her unabashedly experimental leanings and DIY aesthetic put her more in avant-punk territory even as she was unexpectedly prone to some relatively melodic pop turns. In short, she was a true original, albeit one with stunning looks that out-Nina Hagened Nina Hagen, and these two digipak releases chronicle her two albums for Sire, which caused cries of “Sell-out!” by some but are prized by others, which is the kind of conflicted reaction a complex artist like this one gets. Zeena Parkins's pioneering 1992 recording of instrumental harp music is a classic of experimental pop, employing both the natural sounds of the instrument as well as effects and distortion, veering from gentle to scary within the space of a short passage. Fifteen years later, the Table of Elements label has reissued the CD in cool wooden crate-like packaging.
