Lynda Barry, creator of the popular independent strip ERNIE POOK’S COMEEK, edits this anthology of creative visual storytelling--the third in this series. The volume collects an extremely diverse range of styles: from Barry’s gritty, collage-y introduction to Jason Lutes’s black-and-white retro noir; from Eleanor Davis’s water-colored, fantastic naturalism to David Axe and Steve Olexa’s pixilated wartime realism; from Matt Groening’s recognizable big-eared characters to Chris Ware’s New Yorker covers. The book presents the strips in alphabetical order by creator and never quite shakes the dark tone set by the first two entries (reflective of the times, it could easily be argued). Often the laughter invoked is sardonic, but there’s enough humor and playfulness in the mix to keep the reader sprightly turning pages. A testament to this form’s creative potential, this is a wonderful collection for comics experts and new initiates alike.
