Wayfarer

WAYFARER lives up to the high watermark established by its predecessor EIRE: ISLE OF THE SAINTS. Like EIRE, WAYFARER features John Doan's "harp-guitar," a unique hybrid instrument that combines the ringing, mellifluous, high-end sound of the harp with the mid-range substance and low bass of a guitar. Like EIRE, too, this album is tranquil, reflective, and very conducive to yoga, meditation, and the healing arts.
The album has a strong Celtic feel, yet the music cannot be considered traditional. Doan is primarily concerned with evoking the spiritual mystery inherent in much Celtic mythology (in fact, the album was composed on various sacred spots in Ireland), and Doan's work does generate visions of rolling Irish countrysides and forests filled with fairies and sprites. Yet the music's ultimate effect is to soothe, and induce a state of meditation.
Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.76) - "...John Doan's Celtic soul collection of instrumentals embraces mythology and timeless wonder worlds....The tunes are adventurous excursions into spirituality and mysticism, with help from Billy Oskay on violin and viola."
